What is the difference in penance and penitence in Ch. 5 of The Scarlet Letter?

Hawthorne talks about it around the middle of chapter 5. It's page 57 in my book (Dover Thrift Editions). Penance and penitence mean relatively the same thing so I can't figure out the difference that is raised.
